Sabre and Scalpel is an autobiography that portrays a time and career which is most remarkable in scope and accomplishment. John Allen Wyeth is a little known individual in today's list of famous individuals. This book in the individual's own words elevates him to a highest level of respect and commitment in my estimation. The likelihood of a rural Alabamian going off fight his country's war, enduring battles, suffering severe conditions in prison, and then returning to become educated in an advanced career is truly the story of novels. His dedication to the medical profession and his accomplishments achieved are beyond remarkable. He was a recognized medical man in our nation's largest city, New York, and established his own hospital with a first in post graduate medical education. He devised unique surgical techniques and was recognized by becoming president of the American Medical Association! What character and ability this man displayed. Today his name is lost in the plethora of facts, stories, and hype that constitute our daily milieu. I highly recommend this autobiography for those with an interest in Civil War history and a first hand commentary on the politics and social forces of the time. This is a great book for that person young or adult who enjoys a great success story of an individual who pursues his goal and gains victory over significant obstacles. This was a great read for me and I hope for you.Jack Butterworth, M,D.
