A facinating tale of Ireland of the not so distant past filled with characters and events that reflect the personal as well as broader historical and economic happenings in Ireland and beyond. One can hear the lilt of Joe Ward's voice as he narrates about Irish life and farming, in particular the boisterous cattle export trade. This part of Ireland has been one of the fastest growing residential and industrial areas in the last many years, so Joe Ward's words create a rich and evocative time. Very readable and highly recommended.

I brought a copy of this book back from Ireland for my husband who's an European historian. I started glancing through it after I bought it, and I couldn't put it down. He couldn't either when I gave it to him. We were both impressed with the writing quality, the research, and the storytelling--it's a excellent example of how a history book ought to be written, and it tells a story of an aspect of Irish history that few Americans are familiar with. It's an eye-opener for Americans interested in Irish history.
