Review Text

I can't recommend this version despite its very low price. It would be better to scan the pages and present them. The process of pulling the text out, like OCR I reckon, did not work on this text, particularly on names and words in the Haida language. Another Swanton book I got thru Amazon was scanned pages of the original book -- for this type of text that worked great.

I love this text, but the quality of the reproduction is terrible! If you are looking for Swanton's work, find an original used copy and not one of these instant reprints. However, if you really want to understand what Robert Bringhurst has accomplished with his Haida translations, you have to read these texts as Swanton and Henry Moody translated them. It is also the only place to read Ghandl's Raven stories to compare with Skaay's "Raven Travelling." The other stories in this book are equally compelling and in a good copy would be a great text to have on the shelf.

(NOTE: this review is for the Forgotten Books edition. It seems to show up on all the editions of this book.) Agree with the other reviewers: the quality of the printing on this edition is inexcusably bad. I gave it two tries but returned both. I've had success with other of these reprints but not with this one. Great book but try a publisher other than Forgotten Books.
