Writing this review in English because it’s a tragedy that there is no English translation of this book. (Not sure who will read this LOL) It does what the greatest crime novels do best: immerse you in a culture and illuminate the world as it is.This story set in a Sami community in The border regions of Sweden, Finnland and Norway. The main protagonist is a lawyer who straddles the cultures by way of her mother’s Sami heritage and her fathers Swedish background who grew up outside the culture and is drawn back in when her Sami family asks her to assist with a legal issue. This is not a crime procedural. The book is really cleverly written and I learned so much about the Sami as a distinct indigenous community. The parallels between other original communities are incredible. If you love Nordic fiction I would highly recommend this - much more than a crime novel. I liken it to the Broken Shore or even the books by Adrian McKinty - utterly of the place and neither romanticising nor condemning the social ills which have been generated over generations. So learn Swedish or German or hopefully they’ll finally translate this so I can give it to my English speaking friends.
