On the afternoon of February 10, 1979, Theresa Ferrara took a telephone call at Apple Haircutters on Long Island, NY. Then she headed out the door `to make an easy $10,000' as she told her niece Maria Stewart. That was the last time anyone in Theresa's family saw her alive. In this book, Theresa's eldest niece Maria has documented her examination of Theresa's disappearance. While Theresa's death was ruled a homicide, no-one has ever been charged for her murder and there have been doubts as to whether the human remains found were even hers. Was Theresa killed over an involvement in the Lufthansa Heist? Was she murdered because of her rumoured informing on drug dealers? This is a story which still has, 30 years later, many unanswered questions. The story of Theresa Ferrara's disappearance and Ms Stewart's quest for the truth makes for compelling reading. Yes, this book has some flaws in presentation but these did not undermine the dual stories. Dual stories? Yes. For while this is a recounting of the Theresa Ferrara story, it is also a story of the family left behind when Theresa disappeared and how they (especially Maria Stewart) have tried to come to terms with her absence.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

A true story written by a woman who lost her aunt Theresa, when she disappeared in 1979 by a method that the author is attempting to discover. Was Theresa killed, did she vanish in the witness protection program, was she still working for a government agency, or is she just hiding somewhere for safety? Theresa had been involved with law enforcement, with gangsters, with drugs, and who knows what else.Maria Stewart tells her aunts childhood growing up, and her life as known, or thought of, until her disappearance. Maria and Theresa had done many things together in their youth, enjoying hanging out together. Theresa started going out with other "friends" that were considered not the best people, but she went almost everywhere she wanted to, especially different clubs. Many times she would take younger Maria with her clubbing even though Maria was too young. It was easy to get into the clubs with Maria and her friends. Then, Theresa disappeared. No one, family, law enforcement, or friends could find her. She disappeared off the face of the earth, or so it seemed.Maria continues on throughout the book telling her thoughts, versions of what could have happened, and what everyone thought did happen. Even the newspaper clippings of any story about Theresa are in the book for all to read. Maria took a lie detector test that showed her innocent of any knowledge of her aunts disappearance. Maria talked with old boyfriends, other acquaintances, and questioned law enforcement herself. When a torso appeared some thought it might be Theresa but no one was certain. The authorities decided it might be Theresa so her family gave that torso a proper burial hoping it was their lost family member. It was thought at one time that the famous Lufthansa Heist might have involved Teresa but no one was certain. Maria went to a psychic who seemed to be giving Maria good information that she followed up on but did not bring any final solution. She had much faith in this psychic. DNA was not available when Theresa disappeared but now they debated about digging up the torso to compare.Maria is still not sure what happened to Theresa. She still has hopes of obtaining some new information but her life now goes on. This book is a fairly good read as Maria tells all the information but there is no deep mystery involved other than where Teresa disappeared to and the many ideas that everyone had many times led to more questions than answers.

This book was definitely an interesting read. Maria is the niece of Theresa Ferrara and also the last person that saw Theresa alive. This book is Maria's recount of her recollection of the events that led up to the disappearance of her aunt as well as the aftermath and her resolve to find out what really happened. If you know a little bit about this story or were aware of this story when it happened and saw the newspaper articles, you will definitely like this book. I had no idea what this story was about but it intrigued me and I wanted to know what happened to Theresa Ferrara too. It kept me turning pages to see what would happen and what the outcome was.Did it answer all the questions? No. But unfortunately, this is a true to life event that happened. Not just a story being told by some writer. Ms. Stewart couldn't weave a great ending as she was bound by the truth and only can report the actual facts and circumstances surrounding what she discovered. But overall, this was a great book that shed light on the suspicious circumstances that surrounded Ms. Ferrara's disappearance.
